La Gran Sabana (English: The Great Savannah) is one of the major natural attractions in Venezuela and is located in the south of Bolívar State on the Venezuelan-Brazilian border, approximately 1,400 km from Caracas. The area has a tropical humid climate with an average temperature of 28 ?C, but at night it can go down to 13 ?C It lies on a plateau with a mean altitude of 1000 meters above sea level. From the wide savannah, huge table-top mountains tepuys rise to altitudes of up to 1800 meters above the surronding area. In it live diverse indigenous groups, the most populous of them is the Pemón. The highest tepuy (mountain) is Roraima at 2,810 meters above sea level, where the borders between Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana convege. Its most important city is Santa Elena de Uairén, 5 kilometers from the Venezuelan-Brazilian border, with approximately 12,000 inhabitants.
